Abstract

Objective - The research was undertaken with the aim of creating nomograms for assessment of gestational age on the basis of ultrasound measurement of the transversal cerebellar diameter (TCD) of fetuses from normal singleton pregnancies.

Subjects and methods - During a five year period (2004-2009) we measured TCD from 13 to 40 gestational weeks in normal singleton pregnant women, aged 18 do 35, with known date of first day of last menstrual period, who according to ultrasound estimation of gestational age were in the first trimester. The mean values and standard deviation of TCD for each gestational week were calculated on the base of a minimum of 3 measurements. A total of 1854 measurements from 286 healthy pregnant women were obtained. All measurements were performed by a GE Voluson 730 expert.

Results - Mean TCDs, with one standard deviation for each gestational week were determined as reference values and TCD increase weekly 1mm from 13 to 24 weeks, 2 mm to 34 weeks and 1 mm in the last four weeks. The exception was the rapid increase in the 35 week of 3.9 mm and the 36th week - 3.8 mm.

Conclusion - Growth of the fetal cerebellum shows a high correlation with gestational age throughout pregnancy.
