Abstract

The main goal of this review is to present coeliac disease in children as we know it today together with recent breakthroughs in all of its areas: epidemology, ethiopathiogenesi, pathiophsyology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, coeliac screening, treatment and prognosis. The following is emphasized: although still insufficiently, the disease is diagnosed more and more frequently; in spite of some controversy it is still considered an immunological disease; there are some changes in the clinical presentation: non classical forms are more frequent resulting in various complications (especially serious ones) but are better defined. There are some new possibilities concerning diagnostics procedures but they should remain quick, simple and possibly non-invasive. The principle treatment is still a lifetime gluten free diet. New research opens up many new areas yet to be answered, the most important refers to screening procedures within certain groups but also in the general population and reliable tests and procedures which are acceptable for subjects undergoing testing and favourable for health insurance.
