Neuro-Risk Child [Article in Bosnian]

Nevzeta Mustafić, Jasmina Trnovčević

Abstract

The term "at risk baby" appeared in the medicine literature in 20th century in the 60s in Great Britain. The purpose was the early detection, according to certain criteria, of children with physical, mental and social handicaps who were, in the prenatal, perinatal or postnatal period, exposed to risk factors which could lead to irreversible brain damage. The number of risk factors has decreased as a result of numerous studies and long-term monitoring of neurorisk children. The neuro-risk child does not necessarily mean that it is immediately a child with damage. This condition requires the intensive monitoring of the child’s psychomotor development and if necessary the introduction of therapy treatment. Today it is assumed that 10-15% of children who are born alive belong to the group of neuro-risk children, and 50% of them could be expected to have slight or severe neuro-developmental deviations. In Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole there is no a common register for registration of children with neuro-risk. With the implementation of a common register we would have a better insight into risk factors during pregnancy, birth or after birth which lead to irreversible changes in brain, and as well as monitoring of neuro-risk children, their early detection, psychomotor development and treatment success.
